Teaching & Learning with the Power of Technology!

A Fully Developed, Standards-Based, Interdisciplinary
Project Using the Power of Technology!

Health Watch! In many schools, health curriculum is relegated to a small portion of the science or physical education curriculum. Health Watch! takes an interdisciplinary approach to health education. Designed for middle school, Health Watch! integrates reading, writing, and critical thinking into many content areas. The activities are driven by the national standards of several disciplines, including science, English language arts, mathematics, social studies, and fine arts.

This project strives to engage students by appealing to their natural creativity and curiosity, while providing students with a strong foundation in research skills using the Internet, print material, and computer software. Students will use technology to employ a variety of different learning styles and will demonstrate their understanding of the material in multiple formats. The Health Watch! project sets high academic goals and offers students the means to achieve them. The project emphasizes the use of both traditional and technology-supported research. A distinct component of the Health Watch! project is its adaptability. Teachers can adjust any or all structures to meet their students' needs more adequately: group size, time on task, level of support, and task difficulty.

Many habits that compromise the health of adults begin during childhood and adolescence. Serious health issues, such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, and heart disease, can be prevented or controlled through healthier choices.

The Health Watch! project engages students in a study of critical health topics such as smoking, nutrition, dental health, personal hygiene, and fitness. Students identify influences that affect health choices and recognize how personal choices contribute to good health.

Students become "authorities" on critical health issues as they complete the activities in this project. They will create brochures, posters, books, presentations, and other products, as well as take an active role in teaching what they have learned to their school and their community. It uses technology to give students access to a variety of resources as they develop an in-depth understanding of the body, its health, and positive life choices.

Health Watch! includes a color-printed instructional booklet (also supplied in PDF form on CD-ROM), site licenses for Volumes 1 to 3 of the Family Health Series (The Body, Illnesses & Injuries, and Staying Healthy), and their companion Lesson Builder CD-ROM programs (which include additional resources for teachers, including fact sheets, worksheets, tests, graphics, and screens of content from the program for lesson creation).

In addition to the health software titles used in the Module, you will need:

  • A multimedia presentation application (such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Apple Keynote),
  • A publishing application (such as Microsoft Word or Publisher), and
  • A graphics application (such as corefx Three Level, award-winning creativity software from Core Learning, offered at a special price when purchased with the Health Watch! project).

The Health Watch! project was written and created for Core Learning Ltd. by TechKnow Associates, experts in project-based learning and integration of technology with curriculum.
